I feel that hiring a contractor is not only about the walls and plumbing, but that you must have an inherent trust of the person you are bringing into your home. You are hiring the person, not the truck. Much of what is done is not something that one has the ability to oversee or understand well (otherwise you would do it yourself). It is clearly evident that Joe Gelsomino takes such pride in the quality of his work and realizes that his reputation is not only built on the finished product today, but is built on the fact that his work truly stands the test of time. He cares about his clients and I frequently spoke with him late in the evening or on a weekend when he was returning home from an emergent problem that one of his clients had. Throughout the project, I always felt that Joe had our best interests in mind in regard to quality of work, quality of materials, and cost. As we got to know each other, he learned what our personal tastes were and was able to make suggestions based on his experience that helped make the rooms exceed our original vision.

One of the reasons we wanted to write to you is to tell you about a visit we had with our uncle who is a retired contractor from Ulster County. He has visited our home over the years and has always found flaws with previous home improvement projects of ours. Well, he walked onto the porch and stopped short. He said, "WOW who did this, the woodwork is outstanding". He pointed out different things that he said must have been very difficult to do properly because of the preexisting structure you had to deal with. It takes a lot to get a complement out of him so we appreciated the porch even more.

The porch is not the only work we are pleased with. The new architectural shingled roof looks great. We know it is going to last us a long time too. Also, we must say we think of you every time the sub pump kicks on which it did plenty of during the recent rain and defrosting of the snow. Truthfully we cannot say anything negative about our experiences with you. This is almost unheard of when dealing with a contractor. The fact is that you were hear when you said you would be, the work was completed when you said it would be and during each project, when you or your crew left for the evening, the area was clean and neat.

The many questions my wife and I had were met with calm reassurance by Joe Gelsomino, and never did we feel rushed to make a decision about style or substance. Joe would lay out all the options on the table and explain the pros and cons. This made it easier for us to choose the right one for us. This kind of service, during a time that is known to architects as ?renovation stress time', was greatly appreciated by my family. Installation of a new heater several months before had left the old heater in the wall at window height; if the old heater were taken out, there would be a hole in the wall. Putting in a new window would brighten and improve the appearance of half of the house.

Joe's thinking about this was that small jobs well executed led to more business. Several days later I had a new window that was exactly the same size and configuration as the 20-year-old one next to it (except that the new one is framed much better!). The exterior trim also was exactly matched. The old heater was discarded and the whole area was completely cleaned up. Even my old living room rug was cleaned up.

I was also looking for someone to remove a couple of maple trees, because our previous tree removal person had moved. The maples were leaning over the house. Joe got the trees down a couple of days before a windstorm that toppled a tree across the street. He also left intact a smaller tree right next to one of the maples.

These jobs had gone much better and faster than I had planned, so I asked Joe to think about a third one that I considered nearly impossible. He and his crew probably thought it was odd that I didn't use the front door of the house. But the door was still stuck after winter freezing and thawing had pushed up the piers supporting the house. Usually around mid-spring the floor of the house has settled enough to get the door open and closed without forcing it, but not this year. Joe reinforced the front center pier and porch steps. The door opens and locks with ease now, and the interior floor and walls are straighter than they have ever been. So are the porch, steps and even the roof.

Before, my house was crooked, had a defunct heater in one wall and a couple of leaning trees. In a little over a week, it was made squarer and more secure and attractive. Gelsomino Construction won me over with little jobs that were fairly priced and well executed, and various enough that I know they would handle a bigger job the same way.

The finished work for me was high quality and was exactly as discussed and planned. I look forward to calling on Gelsomino again in the future and would not hesitate to recommend them to my family and friends.

The task is always completed in a timely manner. The work site is left clean and ready to use.

If the job is not perfect, Joe will not leave! We never had to bring any part of the job to Joe's attention.
